About Julia

Hey there. Welcome.

My name's Julia, and even though I'm a writer, I find it hard to put myself into words. Perhaps it's because I'm a polymath. Perhaps that's just how it goes.

I'm a 1980s baby, 90's gifted kid, and secular, eclectic, progressive homeschool parent. I love the outdoors, music, hanging out with my people, and writing. My life and career have taken some twists and turns, but I'm an educator at heart. I've been a camp counselor, a riding instructor, a yoga teacher, a preschool teacher, and I've taught 6th grade reading to gifted kids. I'm a Texas girl living in the PNW, and I hold two master's degrees: Information Studies (yay archives!) from the University of Texas, and Human Development and Education from UC Denver/The Boulder Journey School.

I didn't plan to homeschool. I expected my daughter would start kindergarten at our neighborhood school and I would devote my time to building my parent coaching practice. I loved the idea of supporting parents of highly sensitive children.

That was 2020.

My daughter was meant to start kindergarten in 2020.

We enrolled her feeling hopeful that schools might open up. Then the orientation was scheduled on zoom. As I tried to listen and my daughter flipped upside down on the couch, I knew it wasn't going to work for us.

So we started homeschooling, and I built my coaching practice to fit with our rhythm. As a secular homeschool parent, I was frustrated by how difficult it felt to find a community of peers for my daughter (and for me!). As a parent coach, I began to realize that the parents who were drawn to me weren't just parenting highly sensitive kids. They were parenting gifted and twice exceptional kids. I started to pull back a little bit with my marketing. Eventually (in 2026!) I decided to shift my focus as a coach to parents like me: secular homeschooling parents, especially ones with gifted/twice exceptional kids.

I wanted to continue with one-on-one coaching, but I also wanted to build the type of community that I wished I had: an online equivalent of a brick and mortar resource center. Away from facebook and Instagram.

So I started a small membership community on Skool: Road Less Traveled Homeschool. It's currently priced at $5/month, troll-free, and supportive. I host weekly coffee chats so we can all connect and build our own community with real life people. I'm working on building a penpal club (you know, for the kids), and I'm going to keep adding new features over time.

The community is growing beautifully behind closed doors, but I wanted a way to connect with the wider world, and since my favorite way to do that is through writing, here we are.
